What is a Bat Mitzvah?

– A Jewish coming-of-age ceremony when a girl turns 12—marking her entry into religious adulthood with special blessings, readings, and community celebration.- – A time for gratitude, tradition, and heartfelt celebration.

Preparing for a Bat Mitzvah

– Jewish Learning: Piper has studied prayers, blessings, and Jewish teachings to lead parts of the service with confidence.
– Haftarah: In our Orthodox tradition, Piper will not read from the Torah but will recite the Haftarah (a prophetic reading tied to the week’s portion) and share reflections on its meaning.
– Leading the Service: Piper will guide the Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat service, welcoming in the Sabbath with prayer and song.
– Mitzvah Project: —a way of giving back to the community. It reflects the heart of Jewish values: tikkun olam (repairing the world).Piper has chosen to give her time and work with multiple charities supporting homelessness, connecting her celebration to a greater purpose.

What is appropriate for the Friday Night Service?

– Seating: Men and women will sit on opposite sides of the room.
– Participation: Follow prompts in the service pamphlet (or ask our hospitality team). You may be invited to stand, respond, or sing along.
– Phones: G-d might be calling, but not on your mobile—please put devices on silent and away.
– Photography: Generally discouraged during the ceremony. In this instance, as Shabbat does not begin until later, photos before and after the service are welcome.

Gifts

– Your presence is the greatest gift of all—there is no expectation beyond celebrating together.
– If you would like to give, Piper would be grateful for a monetary gift or gift card.
– In Jewish tradition, gifts are often given in multiples of 18 (chai, meaning “life”)—a meaningful way to share blessings.
– Most importantly, your love and presence at this milestone are what matter most.

Quick Do’s & Don’ts

✅ Do clap, sing, dance, and celebrate—it’s meant to be joyous.
✅ Do respect synagogue traditions during the service.
✅ Do join the Hora—even if it’s your first time, everyone helps each other!
❌ Don’t stress if you’re unsure—just follow the lead of others.
❌ Ladies, please don’t try and hug or shake the hand of the Rabbi. You could simply wave and say hello.

In short: Think of it as equal parts sacred service, milestone dinner party, and dance-till-you-drop celebration—all centered around Piper’s big day.
